Maria’s grandmother had alerted their neighbor before going down to the basement herself. This was part of the reason why Maria survived.
Maria was the last to go down – she survived only because the cellar door was left ajar, saving her life. Her neighbor quickly brought her to the hospital for medical treatment. The rest of her family were unfortunately, pronounced dead.
