Yadira Rostro finally went to the doctor about the headaches she had been having for about nine months. Initially, she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Rostro remembers the headaches were debilitating and her sight was impaired, but the diagnosis of a brain tumor turned out to be incorrect. However, an enhanced MRI showed that Rostro’s brain was infested with parasites!
Rostro was suffering from a condition called neurocysticercosis, which is when the eggs of tape worms enter the brain! Neurocysticercosis is extremely rare, there are less than 1,000 cases each year in the United States. Rostro told doctors that she had gone to Mexico two years ago and believes she ate contaminated food!
