Meet Gavel, a German shepherd who was proved to be too friendly and playful to make the cut for the Queensland police force as part of the K9 unit. At only six months old, Gavel arrived at the Government House in Brisbane to carry on a family tradition of serving the public as part of the Queensland Police Service dog unit. However, he was fired because of his playful nature.
Forty other dogs were similarly dismissed and ended up in foster homes with the Queensland police officers. Luckily, the Government House staff liked Gavel so much that they decided to create a new job just for him. In February, Gavel became Gavel Vice-Royal Dog (VRD).
Always a joyful one, Gavel constantly looks forward to belly rubs for a reward.
His new owners are Paul de Jersey, the Governor and Kaye de Jersey, his wife.
He now welcomes visitors to the Government House, attend functions and ceremonies with the governor and accompanying him in briefings.
Share away, people.
