The doctor who has been chosen to deliver the baby of a mother-to-be will become a part of her life from then on until the date of delivery. For many, it’s a straightforward procedure with no surprises, but for patients of Dr. Carey Andrew-Jaja, there is a surprise – a delightful, positive one!
Dr. Andrew-Jaja with the Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC has delivered thousands upon thousands of new babies during his long career, and he’s always been a respected doctor in the medical world and beyond. But when it comes to bedside manner, he makes sure to use a special technique to truly welcome babies into the world!
His technique isn’t a medical technique per se, but it’s one that has him recognized by many as the Singing Doctor. Every time he delivers a baby, he sings a little tune. Sometimes it’s simple “Happy Birthday”, and sometimes, it’s “It’s a Wonderful World”, but it sets the stage for the beautiful moment that follows when the new mother holds her baby and gazes lovingly at them.
Dr. Andrew-Jaja had always loved to sing, but he only took that passion into the delivery room when his elderly mentor retired. That mentor had also sung to every newborn he delivered, and when it was time for him to move on from the job, he passed the tradition on to Dr. Andrew-Jaja, who was glad to take it on!
The Singing Doctor’s unorthodox but delightful methods have earned him lots of love from patients and fellow doctors alike. He knows that when he sings to a new baby, he’s singing to someone who will do great things in the future, so it’s only right that they receive a warm welcome.
