Our bodies are remarkable, when you take a moment to examine them.
While we may say “as healthy as a horse” when referring to someone’s peak physical health, in comparison to us human beings, a horse may as well be made out of spun glass!
Not many people seem to realise it, but the healing rates that humanity as a species has far outstripped just about any other animal species.
Even prior to the onset of modern medicine, history has plenty of detailed accounts where people easily survived self-inflicted injuries in the name of curing a disease.
Nowadays, we perform cosmetic surgeries on ourselves on a regular basis that would kill most other species!
The reason for this comparably incredible survival rate? Our bodies’ extreme healing factor.
However, that capacity to heal can only go so far, as this man learned the hard way when his case ended up being written into a medical journal.
A photo and a report of a case that is still being puzzled over by medical experts in the community has finally been released by The New England Journal of Medicine.
The report tells of the case of a 36-year-old man who had already been suffering through a long medical history with various heart conditions, to the point that he was forced to have a permanent pacemaker installed.
This unnamed patient had been admitted to a nearby hospital’s ICU after he suffered an acute exacerbation of chronic heart failure.
In other words, his pre-existing heart conditions suddenly worsened to the point of extreme heart failure.
Considering his medical history, this wasn’t a complete surprise. What came as a surprise, rather, was what would happen afterwards.
He was outfitted as soon as possible with an external, mechanical pump that was meant to help keep blood flowing through his body, and then placed on a prescription of anticoagulants.
The man had then stayed in the hospital for a week. Nothing seemed to be improving – rather, the patient started suffering from growing respiratory problems instead, leaving him in distress.
At the peak of it all, he experienced an extremely violent coughing fit.
This, as it turns out, solved the problem – in his coughing fit, he managed to cough out a massive blood clot that had taken the shape of his right bronchial tree.
This massive blood clot that had developed in the network of tubes responsible for transporting air into his lungs was what caused his respiratory difficulties in the first place.
This isn’t the first time something like this has happened.
The report cites an older study of a 25-year-old pregnant woman who had managed to cough up a clot that was equally as astonishing.
However, the size of the clot she coughed up was nowhere near the size this man’s blood clot was.
Realistically, this shouldn’t have been possible.
Doctors suspect that it was precisely the size of the clot itself that allowed the patient to cough it up, as it was big enough for the patient to use the entire right side of his thorax to push it out.
Unfortunately, the heart condition behind this medical marvel was too much for the man, who passed away a week later.
At the very least, this amazing case has been recorded for future doctors to study!
