How many of us have dreamed of giant spiders roaming the earth?
No one.
Maybe some, but most people would agree that that is what nightmares are made of!
Many of us are literally terrified of these eight-legged and hairy creatures that some even start itching all over by just looking at them!
I’m among those who have a serious phobia of spiders and anything else that relatively match these scary looking creatures.
The bigger they are, the more they terrify us.
Just think about Shelob, from the Lord of the Rings, or maybe even Aragog from Harry Potter.
Yep, you’re welcome.
However, people who live in Australia know that these creatures can get really big, really fast.
Unfortunately, these massive spiders aren’t native to only Australia, you will find even bigger ones in the forests of northern South America!
No, they’re not as big as your average car, but they’re big enough to scare the living daylights out of you, and we’re talking about a spider called the Goliath Birdeater.
These spiders are the largest spiders in the world, massive and strong enough to eat sparrows and other small birds.
These spiders can grow between 4.5 and 11 inches in length and yes, that means the biggest ones can be as big as your average dinner plate!
As if that’s not scary enough, their leg span in approximately 28 cm and they weight about half a pound.
So what happens when these spiders lose a limb?
Simple.
They can regenerate them when they shed their excess skin.
Apart from shooting tiny barbed hairs from the back of their abdomen, these spiders can also lay up to 200 eggs during mating season.
The best part, though?
They’re not a danger to humans even though their fangs are large enough to pierce through our skin.
If provoked by humans these spiders will bite, and while they’re venomous, their bite is as painful as being stung by a wasp.
