Kathy Felt of Utah has had multiple sclerosis for many, many years. But then, the condition progressed to dangerous levels and left her facing difficulty in all sorts of seemingly basic tasks.
This included simply maneuvering her way in and out of bed.
Kathy has the aid of her two sons to help her out of bed and around the house every morning, but at night, she’s completely on her own.
She lives by herself, so there reached a point where she knew the only logical solution left was for her to be moved into a special assisted living facility.
But Kathy was reluctant to leave.
She loved the comforts of her home and its familiarity, but her sons simply couldn’t come to help her at night.
Then, one day, a neighbor who knew about Kathy’s condition proposed an idea.
He showed up with a list of 60 strong, volunteering men from all around their neighborhood who had agreed to help Kathy on a nightly routine.
When Kathy found out about this, she was so moved that she couldn’t help herself from crying.
In fact, it’s something that still brings tears to her eyes today. She considers them her miracle.
Every night, two men from this group of 60 take turns in coming over to help Kathy.
They help remove her slippers and socks, stand on either side of her, and gently hoist her upwards and into bed. They raise her feet onto pillows and adjust her until she feels just right.
It’s a very exact process and everything must be in a specific place and comfort level in order for her to feel alright.
When she finally says she’s okay, they pull the covers over her and tuck her in and hand Kathy her phone and whatever else she needs.
This amazing neighborhood effort didn’t start out this way. At first, the men in town weren’t all eager to assist.
Some were worried as they would be entering the house of a woman living alone. Others were concerned as they had no healthcare background whatsoever.
In fact, for one man named John Keller, he did not want to be a part of the assistance at all.
He admits, today, that he only decided to help Kathy because he didn’t want to look bad for saying no.
In this touching video that showcases this town-wide outpouring of compassion towards Kathy, John admits these things with tears in his eyes.
He said he had always thought of himself as a good Christian man, but realizing that he did not want to do a small part in aiding this person in need made him realize he was not what he thought he was.
He wanted to be a better, more compassionate person, and today, he says that his current routine of helping Kathy has made him a better man.
Kathy receives this assistance without fail 7 days a week, and she has done so for over 10 years.
This amazing display of kindness and the sharing of one woman’s burden is a truly beautiful and inspirational thing!
Share away, people.
