19-Year-Old Cat’s Rare Skin Condition Changes Black Fur Into Brilliant Marble Coat

Scrappy, the cat, is amazing for two different reasons.

First, he is 19 years old!

Second because as he has gotten older he has gone from being an all black cat to a black and white cat.

Not only that, the pattern on his coat looks like snowflakes.

The while fur started to come in when Scrappy turned seven.

As the years passed, the white patches grew and started to connect with each other.

This phenomenon is rare in cats, it is called Vitiligo (“white skin” white hair”).

Vitiligo is the result of a loss of skin pigment, it is a hereditary condition but is not something you can see at birth, according to merckmanual.com.

People, black leopards, dogs and other animals are known to get Vitiligo too.

Eventually, the cats with Vitiligo will either become completely white or just have very small patches of colored fur.

Scrappy lives with his human dad and grandma.

When he is not lounging around the house, he loves to nap in the sun.
