A sad start to this story – but the ending is worth hanging around for!
A kangaroo was hit by a car, and the car just kept going. Help arrived too late for the kangaroo, but not for the baby inside her pouch!
Melanie Fraser is a rescue worker with Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network and Wildlife Victoria – based out of Australia, and when she found out about the kangaroo, she rushed to the scene.

The mother kangaroo died shortly after Fraser arrived, but the tiny, pink baby inside was still alive!
Fraser named the now orphaned baby Dawson and scooped him up.
It is lucky she arrived when she did, there is little chance Dawson could have survived for long without his mother.

Wildlife rehabilitation worker, Christine Gilmore estimated Dawson was a couple months old.
Fraser left Dawson in Gilmore’s capable hands, and Dawson is thriving!

Gilmore has cleaned him, fed him, and kept him warm since he arrived. She is now his mom!
Dawson was paired up with another orphaned kangaroo named Nelson, who is just a little older.

Nelson and Dawson not only have Gilmore to take care of them but they also have each other to cuddle with.
Normally, kangaroos will stay with human carers from 18 months to two years.

Dawson and Nelson will grow up together and be ready to be released into the wild at about the same time!
The goal is to allow Dawson to grow up with as little human intervention as possible so he can survive on his own when he is released!
